It’s beginning to look a lot like Dickens

Regular readers of this blog will know that I like to do a spot of knitting. At the beginning of the year I was asked by Interweave if I’d write patterns for some knitted figures inspired by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol for their holiday edition of Interweave Knits. The editor asked for Scrooge along with the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. I said I’d see what I could do. It was fun to do but I must say, it felt decidedly odd working on such a festive project when, by then, the decs were down, mince pies a distant memory, and I was firmly was in the grip of New Year’s resolution fervour.

I’ve read A Christmas Carol many times before, but, keen to ensure my figures were as closely inspired by the story as possible, I re-read it, paying close attention to both the text and the wonderful illustrations by John Leech that illustrate my copy.

Here’s what I ended up with.

Dickens 1

Working so closely from the novel made the project particularly satisfying, but as it was completed and sent off months ago I’d forgotten all about it, so I had a nice surprise when my copy arrived in the post.

I’m particularly fond of my Spirit of Christmas Present in his green robe. I feel like I must having been thinking about The Big Lebowski when I made him – he’s definitely got a bit of the dude about him!

I’m currently using up some of my yarn stash on a cable and lace hat and have just splashed out on some Icelandic yarn ready to start a Fair Isle patterned jumper in the New Year. After that, I think I’ll be ready to knit some more little authors to add to my collection. Who to knit though? Hmm… I shall have to get my thinking cap on!

Until then, I’d like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
