It’s beginning to look a lot like Dickens
Regular readers of this blog will know that I like to do a spot of knitting. At the beginning of the year I was asked by Interweave if I’d write patterns for some knitted figures inspired by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol for their holiday edition of Interweave Knits. The editor asked for Scrooge along with the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. I said I’d see what I could do. It was fun to do but I must say, it felt decidedly odd working on such a festive project when, by then, the decs were down, mince pies a distant memory, and I was firmly was in the grip of New Year’s resolution fervour.
I’ve read A Christmas Carol many times before, but, keen to ensure my figures were as closely inspired by the story as possible, I re-read it, paying close attention to both the text and the wonderful illustrations by John Leech that illustrate my copy.
Here’s what I ended up with.
Working so closely from the novel made the project particularly satisfying, but as it was completed and sent off months ago I’d forgotten all about it, so I had a nice surprise when my copy arrived in the post.
I’m particularly fond of my Spirit of Christmas Present in his green robe. I feel like I must having been thinking about The Big Lebowski when I made him – he’s definitely got a bit of the dude about him!
I’m currently using up some of my yarn stash on a cable and lace hat and have just splashed out on some Icelandic yarn ready to start a Fair Isle patterned jumper in the New Year. After that, I think I’ll be ready to knit some more little authors to add to my collection. Who to knit though? Hmm… I shall have to get my thinking cap on!
Until then, I’d like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
I’d love to see some knitted women authors. The Bronte sisters?

Well, you’re in luck! I have a little Bronte and a Woolf so far which you can probably find if you click on the knitted authors link. I’ll definitely try and knit up a couple more this year once I’ve got Jumper knitting out of my system!

Wow! What about an Agatha Christie?
No idea why she popped into my head.

I’m impressed you can create patterns when I can barely follow them. Last night I had to unravel the slouch hat I was knitting (fourth attempt) because yet again I had picked up an extra stitch. So Fair Isle or Aran are way beyond me…

Aw don’t give up! The path to perfection is paved with dropped stitches and tangled yarn! 😤

Okay so where can I buy the patterns?

Good question! I think the magazine is US only but you might be able to buy it to download from the Interweave website.

Oh, I love this! How adorable!
Can’t wait to see what you come up with next! I’m imagining what little Anne of Green Gables characters might look like… 🙂

OMG they are ACE!!! I love the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come, and outwith December the Ghost of Christmas Present can do double duty as a Barry Gibb/Noel Edmonds lookalike. I love them and I want to make them!

Haha yes! Maybe I should start a collection of has-been tv presenters, or maybe disco greats just for the opportunity to use up my stash of shimmery acrylic yarn that is of no use for anything else!

Lovely, and now you’ve put ‘the dude’ in my head, I can’t shift him. Might have to dust off that dvd again.
Happy New Year.
