Icelandic Drama: part 1
I’ve just turned 50 – woohoo! To celebrate arriving at such a grand old age, my family and I went to Iceland (the country, not the frozen food emporium – that would make for a very different post). Given that I’ve spent the past few years reading every Icelandic crime novel I can get my mitts on, and gazing daily, at Icelandic webcams, I was more than a little excited.
We spent a week there, the first few days Air B&Bing in Reykjavik, and then we hoped to head north for a few days depending on the weather. Luckily, we did manage to do that, although driving in the snowy north was pretty scary, and probably added a bit more ‘snow’ to the colour of my hair.
Anyway, here are some of my pics from our stay in the south.

I took a screenshot of the webcam – that’s us feeding the ducks!
Thingvellir Gullfoss
I’ll post about our trip to Akureyri, and our travels in the north next time……
A very happy birthday! How brilliant to get to Iceland finally. And webcams – oh dear, I can see myself whittling away endless hours now that I know they exist! 😱😂

Thanks Liz! Enjoy the webcams – watching those very ducks and swans in Reykjavik is by far my favourite waste of time!

Happy birthday. I do envy you, I spent 5 days in Reykjavik in 2017 and loved it. Northern lights tour was successful but our golden circle tour was cancelled because of bad weather and so I really want to go back. My photo from the top of that church was a very snowy one.

Thanks Ali! we had the opposite luck – we managed the golden circle but the northern lights eluded us. Fortunately, it didn’t spoil the trip, if anything, it’s an excuse to go back again! 😉

Iceland is on my list of places to visit but I think I need to save up first. It’s meant to be mega man xpensive isn’t it?

It is, even if you’re self-catering, like we were. You can keep the costs down though. Hiring a car is far cheaper than the organised trips and gives you more freedom and control over where you go. There’s not much traffic so even I managed it, and I’m ashamed to admit I’m such a chicken when it comes to driving unfamiliar cars let alone, left hand drive ones! Also, we skipped the Blue Lagoon for the geothermal pools the locals use, and that alone saved us a fortune.

Oh wowwww the screenshot of the webcam!!!! I love that you did that 😀 I’ve been watching that thing for years, it’s lovely to see you there. And it all looks amazing, beautiful! And 50 is the new 30, at least as far as the DWP and pension age eligibility is concerned 😉

Haha, ain’t that the truth – there’ll be no pensions by the time I’d be eligible! You must, must, must go. It was epic. Simon is worried that I want to move there. He might be right! 😉

I was so worried that it might not live up to my high expectations, but it was majestic. What a beautiful country – I’m officially obsessed!

Happy birthday!! Iceland is such a beautiful place, and a good reason to read The Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

Thank you! And yes – what a top suggestion, I had completely forgotten that was where The Journey to the Centre of the Earth is set.
